Young Researchers Program

A training and mentorship initiative that discovers and promotes young, dynamic minds in media and tech research — pairing them with seasoned mentors and real, publishable projects.

The Program

In an age where the media landscape is rapidly evolving, there is a pressing need for fresh perspectives and innovative strategies. Herein lies the importance of nurturing young, dynamic minds interested in media and tech research. The MJRC Young Media Researchers Program is a training and mentorship initiative aimed at discovering and promoting young talents with an interest in media and tech research. It seeks to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to navigate the media landscape and contribute meaningfully to it — engaging with experts, gaining insights, and building a network that opens doors to opportunities.

Who it’s for

Aspiring media and tech researchers keen to expand their knowledge and hone their skills — typically still in their learning stages, and eager to make their mark.

It welcomes students from media studies, journalism, communication, sociology, psychology and data analysis, but isn’t exclusive to those with a formal media education: passionate self-learners, independent researchers, and curious hobbyists are encouraged to take part. BA students looking to diversify their studies with practical experience can join as part of a university internship or school project.

How it works

A multi-layered approach combines theoretical instruction with practical, hands-on experience, so participants both understand the principles of media research and can apply them in real-world contexts.

Seasoned media professionals mentor each participant, sharing experience, giving constructive feedback, and helping refine research techniques. The program is highly practical: participants are guided through the methodological process, then assigned a research project of their own to produce qualitative work and earn exposure through studies and articles published by MJRC and its partners.

How to apply

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. A letter of recommendation or internship request from a mentor is appreciated, but we strongly encourage young people to apply with their own research idea or an interest in joining one of the center’s ongoing projects.

Send a 1–2 page letter in English expressing your interest to mjrc@journalismresearch.org with the subject “MJRC Young Media Researchers Program.”

RemoteThe program is conducted remotely, with short research stays organized for selected participants when travel funding is available.
Free of chargeThere is no tuition or participation fee. A small cohort is selected each year in line with mentor capacity.
Real, publishable workEvery participant produces a research project published by MJRC and its partners — the work collected further down this page.
