CMDS Advisory Board member Anya Schiffrin and Peter Cunliffe-Jones survey some of the fixes tried for dis- and misinformation in the Global South in a chapter in the new book Disinformation in the Global South.
The volume, edited by Herman Wasserman and Dani Madrid-Morales, has been published by Wiley-Blackwell. It offers a geographically diverse collection of perspectives on the phenomenon of disinformation as it manifests in Africa, Latin America, the Arab World and Asia, using case studies and comparative analyses.
The chapter authored by Anya Schiffrin and Peter Cunliffe-Jones is entitled “Online Misinformation: Policy Lessons from the Global South.” It looks at some of the measures tried and evaluates their effectiveness.
“It is heartening that some democratic governments around the world are thinking deeply about balancing freedom of expression and harms caused by misinformation,” the authors write.
