The International Press Institute (IPI) and the Media and Journalism Research Centre (MJRC) today launched the Media Capture Monitoring Report, an annual assessment of media capture in EU member states. The reports in this series assess the compliance of national legislation with the newly adopted European Media Freedom Act (EMFA), aimed at combating media capture.
The reports examine the independence of media regulators and public service media, the misuse of state resources to influence the media, and the impact of political interference on media pluralism and editorial independence – the four areas of capture identified by MJRC experts in their research on capture. Each report includes detailed recommendations.
Today marks the release of the first report in this series, which focuses on media capture in Romania. This release is the first in a series covering other countries including Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Bulgaria, Greece and Finland.
The Media Capture Monitoring Report is part of IPI’s Media Freedom Rapid Response Program, which monitors and addresses press freedom violations in new member states and candidate countries.
