In Memoriam John Masuku

We were heartbroken to learn of the passing of our colleague and dear friend, John Masuku, who died in Harare last week. John was not only one of our closest collaborators over the years, but also a passionate and dedicated voice in broadcasting. He came to visit us in Budapest, and we were truly delighted to spend time with him.

Born in Harare, John began his career at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) in 1974 as a radio announcer and producer. Through hard work and commitment, he rose through the ranks to become General Manager of Radio Services. In 2002, he joined Radio VOP, an independent alternative radio station, where he continued to champion independent broadcasting.

Over the years, John also built a reputation as a respected media consultant, radio trainer, and broadcast journalist. He served as the International Campaign Coordinator for UNESCO’s World Radio Day 2023, helping to elevate the importance of radio worldwide.

In his later years, John devoted himself to mentoring young journalists and helping them grow in their careers.

John will be deeply missed by his family and by all of us at the Media and Journalism Research Center who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

May his memory be a blessing.
