The resignation of almost all journalists at Index.hu, the largest independent news site in Hungary, was a new and sad stage of a protracted process that has been dragging on for ten years now, our Fellow, Attila Batorfy writes in his article published by Atlo. “Most of the developments as part of this process were not results of regular market maneuvers but consequences of the implementation of the government’s media policies. The changes in the market over the last decade were driven by targeted and discriminative state regulation, the disproportionate and unlimited use of state funds, and the taking over by government-friendly interests of a series of independent media companies,” he writes. The article, which includes a very informative, visualized summary of this process, was prepared in partnership with CMDS.
